Michal Chelbin
- Nace en Israel en el año 1974, aunque en la actualidad vive y trabaja en Nueva York en Brookling desde el año 2006
- Retratista con una marcada personalidad propia.
- Usa luz natural y poses sencillas
- Ningún antecedente familiar dedicado al arte o la fotografía.
- De 1996 a 2001 estudia arte en Israel, donde hizo el servicio militar haciendo en el mismo las labores de fotografa.
- Trabaja una temporada como reportera, pero comenta ella misma que la echaron porque siempre llegaba tarde al sitio. Eso la decidió a hacer un trabajo personal sin imposiciones, ni sometimientos a un horario o sistema.
- Tiene tres libros publicados, y tiene obras en numerosos museos e instituciones.
- The strangely familiar (2008)
- Primer libro y el que le lanza al reconocimiento publico.
- Retrata a personas relacionadas con el mundo de la farandula, el circo, el ballet, el teatro, etc.
- Composicion centrada en formato cuadrado y con luz natural siempre.
- Mirada frontal del modelo, que supone una conexión entre el modelo y el espectador.
- Muchas de sus fotos son de niños o adolescentes.
- El dominio del color es fantástico, ayudado por el hecho de ser analógico y que el revelado también lo sea, no es escaneo e impresión digital.
- Casi todas las fotos están hechas en países del Este, donde la luz aporta un toque especial.
- Usa Hasselblad al que pone un parasol variable, y lo adapta para tele, con lo que se produce un viñeteado.
- Metodo de trabajo
- Pasa un primer tiempo con ellos, conociéndolos.
- Pueden pasar días hasta que considera que puede empezar a retratar.
- Improvisa, pero con una base programada.
- Durante las sesiones se intercambian conocimientos, ella enseña como maneja la cámara,, y el modelo le enseña sus habilidades.
- Va sola al trabajo, no lleva ayudantes, ni equipo de apoyo.
- No usa reflectores, siempre luz natural.
- Todo en película no usa para nada lo digital.
- En todos sus retratos hay algo siempre no resuelto, algo que nos inquieta, en este sentido es muy parecido al trabajo de Diane Arbus.
- Es muy importante el casting del modelo, debe ser alquien con una impresión potente.
- Cree mucho en los accidentes felices, algo que se encuentra a posteriori.
- The black eyes / El ojo morado
- Retrata a niños y niñlas en gimnasios de países del Este, fundamentalmente Ucrania y Rusia.
- Son gimansios que los preparan para la lucha libre o la lucha grecoromana.
- Importancia del color en la foto, recuerda el trabajo de Vanessa Windship.
- Trabaja con películas de 400 llegando a forzar a 1600., y usa el trípode para las fotos.
- En las fotos se aprecia el abandono y dejadez de ese tipo de gimnasios, lo cual añade un toque especial a los retratos.
- Este proyecto nace durante la elaboración del libro anterior, ella ya pensaba en su próximo trabajo.
- Las fotos las hacia inmediatamente después de terminar un combate, con lo que los modelos estaban cansados, sudados, y dan mas impresión los retratos.
- La edición del libro la encargó a otra persona.
- EL proyecto durá 4 años
- La mayor parte de las fotos son en los interiores de los gimnasios, tiene algunas en exteriores, pero no tienen la fuerza y el gancho de las interiores.
- Sailboats and swnans / Veleros y cisnes (2012)
- Surge la idea en la confección de su Segundo libro.
- Hace las fotos en cárceles de mujeres, de hombres y de niños.
- Paises del Este, Ucrania, Rusia.
- Antes de hacer la foto no quiere saber nada de los antecedentes del modelo, para no sentirse influenciada, luego si entabla conversación con ellos.
- El titulo del libro se lo dá los papeles pintados que todos ellos tienen en sus habitaciones, y que son muy chillones.
- El proyecto le lleva 4 años
- El libro tiene 62 fotos, todas ellas hechas con Hasselblad.
- Actualmente está trabajando en un proyecto retratando a niños de una academia militar.
- Hizo un trabajo por encargo de toreros.
